The Mediasmith Project

Transmedia documentary as research: telling new stories in new ways

Who we are

Ruth Leary: Project Lead

Ruth Leary PhotoI’m a Senior Teaching Fellow at the Centre for Cultural Policy Studies at the University of Warwick.  I’ve previously held managerial roles in the arts and creative industries and now direct the MA in Creative and Media Enterprises.

I’m particularly interested in the intersection of creativity, cultural enterprise, intellectual property and digital technologies. I also have a background in movement and dance which I have increasingly been able to integrate into my research and teaching through the development of the Open Space Learning pedagogy at Warwick. This has fuelled my interest in alternative research methods that integrate intellectual enquiry with new forms of knowledge production.

The Mediasmith Project is a fellowship project funded by the Institute of Advanced Teaching and Learning at Warwick. It is deliberately open ended and experimental but I hope that we might be able to formulate a new way of thinking about how we create and present knowledge and, in doing so, invite new audiences to engage with our work in new and creative ways.

Athina Balopoulou: Project Researcher

Athina1My academic and professional background spans digital marketing, creative industries  and innovation. I hold an MA in Creative and Media Enterprises from the University of Warwick. Previously I worked in the Creative Economy team at NESTA, researching the uses of digital technologies in arts organisations before moving to my current role at MOMA in New York. My earlier work in innovation consulting was focused on identifying growth opportunities for companies within the media, telecommunications and education industries.

I explored the potential of transmedia storytelling in the museum for my MA dissertation which has inspired me to investigate its possibilities as a conduit of information and ideas in learning and the entertainment experiences in more depth.

Terezie Simova: Project Researcher

TerezieI hold an MA in Creative and Media Enterprises at the Centre for Cultural Policy Studies. What drives my enthusiasm and my ambition to contribute in this project is my interest in the film industry and documentary genre. I’m very passionate about documentary production and everything that has to do with documentary or film-making. Besides my involvement in the Mediasmith Project, I also produced my own documentary for Warwick TV whilst studying for my MA.
